Biosafety Training

The Biosafety Office provides a variety of biosafety-related training courses in classroom settings, webinars, and online.

The training information below details the overall course subjects available, the versions of that training currently offered, the format to complete this training, how frequently it should be taken, and who is required to complete the training. Note that only one (1) version of a listed training must be completed to satisfy that training requirement, with exception to Shipping of Dangerous Goods, where both trainings must be completed before approval to ship is granted.

Generally classroom sessions are offered twice a month, but webinars can be set up by request if you are unable to attend one of the existing classroom sessions. To request a training session, please contact us at biosafety@miami.edu. While these trainings are offered routinely, the Biosafety Office can provide more specialized guidance on specific topics beyond those subjects below by request.

Training Subjects

  • Biosafety Training

    Course name and format offered:
    Retaken every:
    • 3 years
    Required for anyone who works with: 
    • Biological materials including: bacteria, human material, animals, plants, viruses, mammalian cell lines, prions, biological toxins, etc. 

  • Recombinant DNA Training

    Course name and format offered:
    Retaken every:
    • Once (every 3 years recommended)
    Required for anyone who works with: 
    • Recombinant and/or synthetic nucleic acid molecules 

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training

    Course name and format offered:
    • UHealth OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens, Biomedical Waste, Latex Allergy and TB Training via ULearn and Blackboard
    Retaken every:
    • 1 year
    Required for anyone who works with: 
    • Human blood, tissues, cell lines, or other potentially infectious materials from a human source, such as on an IRB protocol

  • Shipping Training

    Course name and format offered:
    Retaken every:
    • 2 years for Shipping of Dangerous Goods
    • Once for Shipping of Biological Materials, or when shipping new materials
    Required for anyone who works with: 
    • Shipping hazardous materials to locations outside of the University of Miami
      • All shippers regardless of hazard must complete Shipping of Dangerous Goods training.
      • Those shipping biological materials must complete Shipping of Biological Materials in addition to the Shipping of Dangerous Goods training.

  • Lab Safety Training

    Course name and format offered:
    Retaken every:
    • 5 years
    Required for anyone who works with: 
    • In a laboratory setting with biological, chemical, lasers, or radioactive materials

For navigating Blackboard trainings:

  • Click the link and login at https://www.courses.miami.edu/
  • Click on Organizations on the menu in the left navigation bar.
  • In the "Search your organizations" area, type in the associated EHS training you need.
    • Note, all EHS trainings are built as Organizations in Blackboard.
  • In the second column of the resulting table, Organization Name, find the name of your target training. In the first column for Organization ID, hover beside the course ID and click on the arrow, then click "Enroll".
  • Click Submit, then click OK on the Self Enrollment page.
  • On the left-side of the new menu, click CONTENT to download the training PowerPoint, click MARK REVIEWED after reviewing, and complete the accompanying test.
  • If desired, click on CERTIFICATE under the left-side menu and print.
