Bloodborne Pathogens Guidance

NAME OF TRAINING: BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS
CONTENT OF TRAINING:
  • Alerts the participant to know how bloodborne diseases, primarily human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, AIDS), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV), are transmitted and how to protect oneself against infection. Explains the procedure for post-exposure medical evaluation in the event of an exposure. Review of the Exposure Control Plan. Information on Hepatitis B vaccine.
WHO MUST ATTEND:
  • Mandatory for all employees who can reasonably anticipate having skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral (through the skin) contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials from the performance of the job duties.
  • Training is required at the time of initial assignment of tasks where there is the potential for exposure.
  • Training is required annually thereafter.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine must be offered to the employee after completion of training and within 10 working days of assignment of tasks with the potential for exposure. Employees may decline to be vaccinated, in which case a declination form must be completed.

EXPLANATION AND EXAMPLES:
  • Occupational exposure means the exposure to human blood or other potentially infectious materials: human body fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, amniotic fluid and saliva in dental procedures; any body fluid that is visibly contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations where it is difficult or impossible to differentiate between body fluids; any unfixed tissue or organ (other than intact skin) from a human (living or dead); HIV-containing cell or tissue cultures, organ cultures, and HIV- or HBV-containing culture media or other solutions; blood, organs, or other tissues from experimental animals infected with HIV or HBV.
  • NOTE: Bloodborne Pathogens training is presented together with Biomedical Waste, Tuberculosis, and Latex Allergy training as a single session.
