Laboratory Inspections

Why We Inspect

The Laser Safety Officer conducts inspections twice a year in compliance with the Florida Department of
Health regulations for lasers.

What We Inspect

  • Ensure lasers are registered with EHS.
  • Ensure laser users and observers have completed the Basic Laser Safety training within three
    years.
  • Ensure that all laser safety devices are accurately labeled, fully operational, and appropriately
selected for the lasers being utilized.
  • Ensure safety eyewear is accessible, for the appropriate wavelength, and in good condition.
  • Ensure the area where the laser is used is properly controlled and posted with appropriate
    warning signs.
  • Ensure the height of the laser beam is not at eye level for users and observers when standing or sitting.
  • Evaluation of surfaces for potential hazards.
  • And evaluate any additional assessments related to the laser and laser use.

Planning For Inspection

  • Ensure all lasers are registered with EHS using the Laser Inventory Form.
  • Complete Basic Laser Safety training (in person, on Blackboard/ULearn) every three years.
  • Check that safety eyewear is for the correct wavelength, accessible, and in good condition.
  • EHS will notify when they will be doing laser safety inspections. Schedule a time and be present
    at the inspection.

After the Inspection

  • During the inspection the Laser Safety Officer will discuss any findings with the primary laser
user and any other laser users present. An inspection report will be sent to the Principal
    Investigator (PI) and laser user(s).
  • The PI and laser user(s) have two weeks to correct any deficiencies found.  Proof of correction must be provided that action has been taken to correct the finding.
