Laser Emergencies

Exposures

Any individual with an actual or suspect laser-induced injury must:

  • Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Notify the Laser Safety Officer mpeapell@med.miami.edu or 305-243-3269 within 48 hours.

 Eye Injury

Seek treat at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute:

Eye examination must include:

  • Ocular History
  • Visual Acuity
  • Macular Function
  • Color Vision
  • Examination of the Ocular Function

 Skin Injury

Seek treatment at the nearest Emergency Department.

Skin examination includes:

  • Previous skin abnormalities
  • Family dermatological history
  • Medication history

Further examination and testing may be done at the discretion of the medical provider.

 

Fires

  • Turn off laser if safe to do so
  • Extinguish fire, if:
    • Safe to do so
    • You have had fire extinguisher training
  • Evacuate the laser room and close the door
  • Alert others and pull the fire alarm if safe to do so
  • Evacuate the building
  • Call 911
