In Case of Fire

Emergency Action Plan

A fire emergency plan ensures everyone knows what to do the moment an alarm sounds.

When a Fire Is Detected

  • Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Move to a safe location and call 911.
  • Notify Public Safety once you are safe:
  • Coral Gables: 305-284-6666
  • Medical Campus: 305-243-6000
  • Rosenstiel (Marine) Campus: 305-710-7991

Evacuation Procedures

  • Evacuate immediately using the nearest safe exit.
  • Do not use elevators during a fire alarm.
  • Close doors behind you to slow smoke and flame spread.
  • Assist individuals with disabilities if you can do so safely.
  • If you are in need of evacuation assistance, wait by the nearest stairwell until traffic in the stairwell has cleared. Once traffic has cleared, enter the stairwell and securely close the stairwell door. Supervisors/floor leaders are responsible for advising firefighters of individuals on their floor requiring rescue assistance. You can also call 911 to advise the fire department of your location. Firefighters will respond and assist you accordingly.
  • Proceed to your building’s designated assembly area and remain there until cleared by emergency responders.

Accountability and Reporting

  • Report missing individuals to emergency responders—do not re-enter the building unless cleared by emergency responders.

If trapped in a room:

  • Call 911.
  • Place wet cloth material around or under the door to prevent smoke from entering the room.
  • Close as many doors as possible between you and the fire.
  • Signal to someone outside.

If forced to advance through flames:

  • Hold your breath.
  • Move quickly.
  • Protect your head and hair.

Fire Extinguisher Use:

Use a fire extinguisher only if the fire is small, contained, and you have been trained. Otherwise, evacuate immediately.

The PASS method outlines the correct way to operate a fire extinguisher.

  • Pull - Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher handle.
  • Aim - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze - Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  • Sweep - Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is extinguished. Watch for reignition.

Stop, Drop and Roll:

If you or your clothes catch on fire STOP, DROP and ROLL. Stop, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands. Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out.
